Projects in Progress:
South Side Community Art Center
The South Side Community Art Center is the oldest African American art center in existence, residing in a classically detailed mansion that was built in 1892 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 1994. As one of the only remaining WPA arts centers, the South Side Community Art Center is responsible for archiving a large collection of WPA artwork. AltusWorks is providing services to create a critically-needed temperature and humidity controlled archival storage area as well as remediate roof and basement water infiltration. Pending funding, AltusWorks’ future services for the Art Center will include a full facility analysis to determine the best way to preserve the historic building, while meeting applicable codes and better serving the needs of its vibrant community of artists.
