Thanks for coming to La Fête de la Bastille Boat Cruise 2015

Merci à tous who spent a lively evening with Foley and Lardner and AltusWorks on our annual client appreciation boat cruise! We had a great turn out, some delicious French-inspired treats, engaging conversations and, above, all, laughter.

I was told by Will Tippens of Related Midwest that he loves coming to this event as he knows he will see friends and have a great time. We hope to see you all, and more, next year.

Universal Design applied to Affordable Housing

Regardless of a building’s age or construction type, there are many ways to improve usability through thoughtful design. The process of Universal Design (UD) strives to make products and environments usable by the largest range of people without adaptation or specialized design. Building on the requirements for accessibility, UD also takes into account people of various ages, statures, mobility, and physical and mental capabilities. Following the 7 Principles of Universal Design developed by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University, AltusWorks recently presented ideas for incorporating UD principles into the renovation of historic multi-family residential buildings to Related Midwest. Happy Holidays from AltusWorks

Our annual holiday party was festive – dinner at Nightwood, followed by the Redmoon Winter Pageant. The performance was a collaboration between Aerial Dance Chicago, After School Matters, The Chicago West Community Music Center, Redmoon’s Winter Pageant Urban Dance Collective, and The Happiness Club.

Staff and family members had fun posing with a Yeti character, outfitted in a shredded newspaper costume.

Tour sheds light on Stone Production History

Recently, AltusWorks’ Christen Sundquist joined the Western Great Lakes Chapter of the Association of Preservation Technologies  for a tour of the Halquist Stone Quarry in Sussex, Wisconsin. The tour began with a lecture on Halquist’s 85 year architectural stone production history, followed by a tour of the quarry and production facilities. Due to its high quality properties, Lannon stone has been one of the predominately used materials for houses and churches throughout Milwaukee and Chicago since the 1850’s. AltusWorks names Ken Allen to Associate

AltusWorks is pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Allen to Associate. Ken joined the firm in 2009 as a Project Architect. He has worked in the architectural industry for more than 20 years, in both new construction and renovation. He has designed and managed a wide range of projects in the educational, commercial and residential sectors, working with both public and private clients.

In his titled position Ken will continue to lead AltusWorks’ education practice, advance the application of technology and develop projects focused on Facility Analysis; Planning and Management; Expansion; and Renovation. Read full entry »

CTA Harrison Red Line Station Reopened July 28, 2014

As the architect for the CTA Harrison Station design-build renovation project led by Kiewit Construction, AltusWorks is excited to share the eye-catching entrance canopies at the Harrison Street entrance. In an effort to create a fresh face for the CTA, the design is bold yet sleek and is anticipated to become CTA’s new design standard. In addition to the steel and glass canopies, station updates geared to improving the riders’ experience include an interior make-over with new finishes, fare control system, lighting, way-finding signage, and an innovative electrical conversion system to power the emergency systems. Christen Sundquist elected to serve on Elgin’s Design Review Sub-Committee

Earlier this summer, AltusWorks’ Christen Sundquist was elected by Elgin’s Heritage Commission as an Elgin historic district representative on the Design Review Subcommittee. Christen will be responsible for reviewing Certificate of Appropriateness applications of any proposed exterior work and to verify that the project meets the requirements found in the Elgin Design Guideline manual. As the owner of an historic home in Elgin, Christen appreciates the importance of preserving the historic integrity of structures while balancing the requirements of modern necessities.
