Historic Uptown Theater site of holiday festivities

The AltusWorks team enjoyed a tour of the historic Uptown Theater as guests of the Association for Preservation Technology (APT) – Western Great Lakes Chapter’s Annual Holiday Party. APT promotes the best practices for conserving historic structures and their settings.

The intent of the tour was to raise awareness of the theater’s importance and its continued struggle for rehabilitation. The Uptown Theater was designed by architects C.W. and Geo. L. Rapp on behalf of the Balaban and Katz Corporation. The theater opened in August 1925 and was described as “an acre of seats in a magic city” because it featured more than 4,300 seats. The theater is a Chicago Landmark and is recorded on the National Register of Historic Places.
