Universal Design applied to Affordable Housing
Regardless of a building’s age or construction type, there are many ways to improve usability through thoughtful design. The process of Universal Design (UD) strives to make products and environments usable by the largest range of people without adaptation or specialized design. Building on the requirements for accessibility, UD also takes into account people of various ages, statures, mobility, and physical and mental capabilities. Following the 7 Principles of Universal Design developed by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University, AltusWorks recently presented ideas for incorporating UD principles into the renovation of historic multi-family residential buildings to Related Midwest. We look forward to joining with Related to increase the flexibility and equitability of the affordable rental units in their portfolio.
