Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute Envelope Restoration

First assessed by Altusworks in 2008 and again in the spring of 2020 under covid-19 guidelines and protocol the Neuropsychiatric Institute is part of the medical campus at the University of Illinois Chicago. Inspired by the structure and anatomy of the brain, the two towers represent the left and right hemispheres of the brain and there are multiple decorative elements that play on this theme.  Altusworks was awarded the contract to design and administer the repair and restoration of this historic building’s envelope as well as exploring future accessibly solutions for the main entrance to ensure that the “green path” the building is part of will easily pass through the breezeway and accommodate a change in elevation. Restoration work is expected to begin in 2021 and will consist of masonry repair, terra cotta repair and replacement and limestone repair.
