Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute Envelope Restoration
AltusWorks is the architect for the restoration of this historic building’s complicated envelope systems along with the design of new lightening and fall protection systems, new exterior lighting, a reconstructed monumental entrance, and accessibility improvements. Inclusive in our services and for future planning, equitable accessibly solutions were explored to allow the Campus’ circulation path, commonly known as the “greenway”, to be continuous through the lobby and accommodate a significant change in elevation at the historic east entrance.
Located in the heart of UIC’s medical campus west, the building design was inspired by the structure and anatomy of the brain; the two towers represent the left and right hemispheres with the entry acting as the brain stem connecting the two. To support this theme, there are sculpted elements throughout depicting sections of the brain, the spinal cord and vertebrae, as well as identification of early neuroscientists.
Restoration work will begin in 2022 with completion anticipated for late summer 2025.
